Too Smart for the Road?

Four in 10 drivers have been hit, nearly hit by distracted drivers - The Problem Solver: "'Nearly 4 in 10 drivers have been hit or nearly hit by a driver distracted by their cell phone,' according to a June Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company phone survey of 1,004 people, conducted by Harris Interactive. And an April Nationwide survey found that more than one in four smart phone users admit to using mobile applications while driving.

Distracted driving should not be be taken lightly. In 2008, 6,000 people died in crashes involving distracted drivers and more than a half million people were injured, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

'The bottom line is Americans can’t seem to resist the temptation to use the new technology,' said Bill Windsor, Nationwide's associate vice president for consumer safety.


Nationwide's June survey found the most frequently used apps are ones that access email, the Internet and Facebook and Twitter."
