Data points...

A few weeks ago I surveyed students in a class in India on their cell phones. More than half had Nokia phones. Samsung and LG were next in popularity. No one in the class had an iPhone or a Motorola phone.

I took a similar survey yesterday in my BUS271 course. 1 out of 17 students had a Nokia phone, 8 had Samsung, 2 had an iPhone, 4 had Blackberries, 1 had Sidekick, and 1 LG. As students on both continents recognized, Nokia phones are rugged.

I asked my marketing students yesterday about the material used in cars. Specifically I asked if they knew what material went into the body of the cars, including the doors, engine and so on. Not one of the 24 or so students knew that it was metal- aluminium and steel. The current educational level is scary!

We were discussing business models in class, and I asked students about the long-term sustainability of Facebook, YouTube and so on. How will these entities generate sustainable revenues? Today there was a news release stating that "YouTube, the largest video site, is in negotiations with major Hollywood studios for a deal that would let its visitors pay to watch full-length movies, according to two people briefed on the negotiations."
