Today, I received an email from a former student of mine. BM was in one of my classes about three years ago. I remember his as an astute finance major. Once in a while he sends me an email pointing out some interesting piece on finance. I received one such email today where he wrote "How you doing? All these bailouts are just terrible are they not? Why do our government bureaucrats continue to do the wrong thing?"
I have had the pleasure of teaching many wonderful students, some of whom are very bright. I generally do not hear from them, and don't expect to- just as I do not correspond with my teachers often. But the few who keep in touch with me give me great insights, and more importantly, either validate or invalidate my teaching methods and my system of analysis.
Where does one's responsibility end as a teacher? Students ask me for help in finding an internship or a job. This semester I have had some excellent students facing the headwinds from the current economic situation. I am looking around for them. I hold myself partly responsible if I educate students who then cannot find gainful employment.
Have to get past the E in Education..Employment.
